Allahabad HC orders full police security to gangster Mukhtar Ansari during jail/court switch; bars media interviews

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh (UP) to present full security to jailed gangster-turned-politician and former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Mukhtar Ansari “while shifting him from one jail to another and while producing him before any Court from jail and on the way or any other place.”

Furthermore, the Court directed that no media individual can be permitted to interview the dreaded gangster and that he can be accompanied by police personnel during his ingress and egress from jail. The Court barred media individuals in mild of the current killing of gangster and former Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad.

The Court additional stated, “Though we are not against media taking interview of the accused persons but looking to the recent episode this restriction would be in the interest of the under trial prisoner for their safety and security.”

The Court was listening to Mukhtar Ansari’s spouse Afshan Ansari’s plea searching for “adequate safeguards and protection to the petitioner’s husband while he is lodged in District Jail Banda or any other jail and while he is produced before the Special Judge (MP/MLA Court), Allahabad or any other Court in Uttar Pradesh,” whereas pending trial in all different circumstances.
