A court docket in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on Monday convicted self-styled godman Asaram Bapu in a girl disciple rape case registered in opposition to him in 2013.

Sessions court docket decide DK Soni reserved its order on the quantum of sentence for Tuesday (January 31).

The court docket acquitted six different accused, together with Asaram’s spouse, as a result of lack of proof.

As per the FIR lodged at Chandkheda police station in Ahmedabad, Asaram Bapu allegedly raped the girl on a number of events from 2001 to 2006 when she was dwelling at his ashram on the outskirts of town.

“The court has accepted the prosecution case and convicted Asaram under sections 376 2(C) (rape), 377 (unnatural offences), and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code for illegal detention, among others,” particular public prosecutor RC Kodekar stated on Monday.

The controversial godman is presently lodged in jail in Jodhpur in one other rape case.

A Surat-based lady had filed a case of rape and unlawful confinement in opposition to Asaram Bapu and 7 others, certainly one of whom died through the pendency of the trial, in October 2013. A chargesheet was filed in July 2014.
